Pakistan Trekking Visa and Letter of Invitation (LOI) Guide

The single question that fills my inbox every spring is not about K2. It is about the visa. The good news is that Pakistan moved to an online e-visa system that has made things far easier than the old embassy queues, and for standard tourist trekking most nationalities can complete the whole thing from home.

What kind of visa does a trekker actually need?

For trekking and sightseeing you apply for a tourist visa, submitted through the official government e-visa portal. You do not need a separate mountaineering visa unless you are joining a formal expedition on a peak that requires a climbing permit, and even then the tourist visa is the base document. The critical companion to your application is a Letter of Invitation, usually called an LOI.

What is a Letter of Invitation and who issues it?

An LOI is a formal letter from a licensed Pakistani tour operator confirming that they are hosting you, arranging your trek, and taking responsibility for your itinerary. When you book with us, we issue this document on company letterhead and provide the supporting registration details the portal asks for. You upload it as part of your online application. It is the piece most first-timers forget, and its absence is a common reason applications stall.

What documents will I need?

• Passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates, with blank pages.
• A recent passport-style photo meeting the portal specifications.
• The Letter of Invitation from your licensed operator.
• Proof of hotel or tour booking and a rough itinerary.
• Return or onward flight details.
• The visa fee, which varies by nationality and is paid online.

Fees differ by passport and change from time to time, so treat any figure you see online as approximate and confirm the current amount on the official portal at the time you apply. For most Western nationalities the tourist visa fee is modest, often in the range of roughly 8 to 60 USD depending on your country.

How early should I apply, and what goes wrong?

Apply at least four to six weeks before departure. Processing is often faster, but peak season creates backlogs, and you do not want your Baltoro dates held hostage by a pending application. Give yourself margin.
