Gilgit-Baltistan is the northernmost region of Pakistan and the setting for almost all of the country's high mountain adventures. It contains five of the world's fourteen 8,000 m peaks, including K2 at 8,611 m and Nanga Parbat at 8,126 m. Nowhere else on earth packs so many giant mountains into one administrative region.
This is where three of the world's greatest ranges meet: the Karakoram, the Himalaya, and the Hindu Kush. The result is a landscape of deep river gorges, hanging glaciers, and green oasis valleys like Hunza and Skardu. The Karakoram Highway threads through it, linking the valleys and eventually reaching the Chinese border.
The region is culturally rich and varied. You will hear Shina, Balti, Burushaski, and Wakhi spoken in different valleys, and meet communities known across Pakistan for their hospitality. Many areas have high literacy and English is common, which makes travel comfortable for international visitors.
Gilgit-Baltistan is a summer destination for high adventure. The trekking and climbing season runs mainly from June to September, while the valleys are pleasant from spring to autumn. Winter is cold and many high roads close, though lower towns like Gilgit and Skardu stay accessible.

Most travellers fly from Islamabad to Gilgit or Skardu, or drive the Karakoram Highway north. Flights are quicker but weather dependent, while the road is longer but very scenic.
The valleys are pleasant from April to October, while the high trekking and climbing season runs from June to September. Winter closes many high roads but lower towns stay accessible.
General travel to the main valleys needs no special permit, but trekking near border zones and climbing peaks require permits. We arrange all necessary permits as part of our trips.

Skardu is the staging town for every Karakoram expedition, but it is a superb destination in its own right: alpine lakes, cold deserts, ancient forts and the road to the Deosai Plains.
