Deosai National Park is a high-altitude plateau sitting at an average of about 4,114 m, making it one of the highest plateaus on earth. Locals call it Deosai, the land of the giants. For most of the year it is buried under snow and completely cut off. For a few short months in summer it becomes a rolling green wilderness.
The plateau is roughly between Skardu and the Astore Valley, and the drive across it is the main way to experience it. In July and August the plains explode with wildflowers, and clear streams cut through the grassland. Sheosar Lake, a deep blue alpine lake near the western edge, is the classic stop for photos.
Deosai is best known for its wildlife, especially the Himalayan brown bear, which the park was created to protect. You may also see golden marmots, foxes, and a wide range of birds. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the sense of space and silence up here is guaranteed for everyone.
Because of the altitude, weather changes fast and nights are cold even in summer. This is a day trip or a short camping trip, not somewhere to linger without proper gear. Most visitors cross Deosai as a memorable day drive between Skardu and the Fairy Meadows or Nanga Parbat region.
The park is usually open from around July to September, depending on snowmelt. We arrange the jeep transport, park permits, and a guide, and can build Deosai into a wider Baltistan or Nanga Parbat itinerary.
