Baltoro Glacier Trek: Route, Difficulty and Best Time

By Attaullah Shah 9 min read
The vast Baltoro Glacier winding between granite towers toward Concordia in the Karakoram

There is a spot on the Baltoro Glacier trek where you can turn slowly in a full circle and count four of the world's fourteen 8,000 m peaks. Locals call Concordia the throne room of the mountain gods, and standing there at roughly 4,600 m, you understand why. The Baltoro is not a path so much as a highway of ice through the greatest concentration of high peaks on Earth.

This is the approach that leads to K2 Base Camp, and it is a serious undertaking. Here is the route, the difficulty and the timing you need to plan it right.

What is the Baltoro Glacier trek route?

The trek starts at Askole, the last village, and follows the Braldu valley before climbing onto the glacier at Paiju. From there you travel the ice for days, past the Trango Towers and Masherbrum, all the way to Concordia and on to K2 Base Camp.

StageRouteAltitude
1Askole to Jhola~3,000 to 3,100 m
2Jhola to Paiju~3,400 m
3Paiju to Khoburtse~3,800 m
4Khoburtse to Urdukas~4,050 m
5Urdukas to Goro II~4,300 m
6Goro II to Concordia~4,600 m
7Concordia to K2 Base Camp~5,150 m

How difficult is the Baltoro Glacier trek?

The Baltoro Glacier trek is strenuous but non technical, in the same league as the K2 Base Camp approach it forms part of. The difficulty comes from long days on shifting moraine, high altitude and full self supported camping.

Glacier walking is the defining challenge. The surface is a chaos of loose rock over ice, so each step demands attention and your pace stays slow. Trekking poles and sturdy boots help enormously.

What peaks will I see from the Baltoro?

The lineup is why people travel across the world for this trek. Few places on Earth pack so many legendary summits into one glacier system.

  • K2 at 8,611 m, the second highest mountain on Earth
  • Broad Peak at 8,051 m
  • The Gasherbrum group, including Gasherbrum I and II above 8,000 m
  • Masherbrum, the striking pyramid above the mid glacier
  • The sheer granite Trango Towers, a rock climbing legend

When is the best time for the Baltoro trek?

Like the whole Karakoram, the Baltoro season is a short summer window from late June to August. Snow blocks the route earlier, and camps close as autumn cold sets in.

July and August give the most stable weather and the fullest choice of departures. This is also when expedition teams share the glacier, giving base camps a buzzing, historic atmosphere.

How long does the trek take?

The full round trip to Concordia and K2 Base Camp typically runs 12 to 16 days on the trail, plus travel days to and from Skardu. Itineraries that add the Gondogoro La crossing run longer and finish over a different valley.

Build in extra days for weather and acclimatization. The road journey to Askole is rough and can be delayed, so a flexible schedule saves a lot of stress.
